Still - an exhibition of paintings by Ronald Palmer
5 June 2015 to 24 June 2015
Walkabout: Saturday 13 June 2015 at 11h00
Still, the title of an exhibition by Ronald M Palmer focuses on the literary idiom “the still of the night”— that time when night comes to an end, yet day still seems far away.
Palmer, who has been working at the Ernst de Jong Academy of Fine Arts since 2014, makes use of the Baroque and Vinita styles to highlight the impermanence of things beautiful and decadent, just on the verge of decaying. His use of birds to symbolise spiritual states and higher forms of being is significant.
In this collection, Palmer invites the viewer to become an explorer, a snoop and wanderer of unobserved spaces and moments. Some works portray only indigenous flora and fauna and in others collections of objects form importance.
Ronald Palmer matriculated at the Afrikaanse Hoër Skool Sasolburg and graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria in 2004. After school, he spent a year as a volunteer in Israel and after graduation worked in the United Kingdom as a general assistant for Bolton School’s outdoor division until 2006. Since his return, he has painted on a full-time basis.
He has taken part in many exhibitions and competitions, including Sasol New Signatures, Pretoria (2002); Wam Wax, Arts and Music Festival, Sasolburg (2002); Frieda van Schalkwyk Award, University of Pretoria (2002); Tina Skukan Gallery, Group exhibition, Pretoria, (2003); Post-art exhibition, Mind’s I gallery (2003); Sasol New Signatures, Pretoria (2004); Cotlands Charity body painting project (2006);SMAC, Group exhibition, Stellenbosch (2008); Association of Arts Pretoria, Members exhibition (2014); Gallery on 6th, Group exhibition with Ernst de Jong and Ronel Wheeler (2014) and Gallery on 6th, Solo Exhibition, the Secret Garden, Johannesburg (2014).
