ASSOCIATION OF ARTS PRETORIA (Giving art a home since 1947)

Who are we
The Association of Arts Pretoria has been a leading force in the visual arts since 1947.  And years later, we continue to enable creative expression and cultivate a love for the visual arts.  The gallery is centrally situated in the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary in Nieuw Muckleneuk.   The Association is extremely active and has a well-established reputation for excellence.  Serving as a platform for both upcoming and established artists, it has become the hub of art in Pretoria.

Aims and Objectives of the Association
  • the promotion of all forms of the Visual Arts
  • the creation of an active visual arts culture amongst members of all South African communities
  • the development and encouragement of artistic talents and skills
On average, thirty exhibitions are held annually.  The list of the Association’s exhibitors covers all the country’s foremost as well as lesser-known painters and sculptors.  These exhibitions are held to show works of established artists while also making the public aware of more avant garde art and new art forms.

One of the most important projects driven by the Pretoria Arts Association is the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition (sponsored by SASOL since 1990).  The competition is one of the most prestigious and longest-running art competitions in South Africa.  It provides a unique platform for emerging visual artists to showcase their talent and throughout its history, it has launched the careers of countless artists who have gone on to build highly successful and significant profiles, both locally and internationally.

Classical concerts are presented on a regular basis.   Although an art gallery as a venue for recitals is not entirely unique it certainly is the case at the Association of Arts Pretoria.  Not only piano solos are presented - this grand instrument also accompanies flautists, cellists, violinists, singers etc.  Professional, well-established artists as well as up-and-coming music students are given an opportunity to perform at the gallery.  The audience is surrounded by the most beautiful visual art while listening to exquisite musical art.  These are sensual and emotional experiences where different art forms are engaged in dialogue.

The venue is also used for the launch of books and the staff can be of assistance in the evaluation of art works as well as the restoration of damaged works.
