Speel (Play) - an installation by Izanne Wiid & Sunet Ferreira18 October to 6 November 2019
Izanne Wiid and Sunet Ferreira have come together to invite the audience to engage and participate in the nostalgic journey of childhood memories and adult fun and entertainment.
The setting is monotone, the playground neutral, the objects identifiable yet altered, therefore awkward and confusing. The context is uncomfortable, the games unplayable, the structure inaccessible.
The audience, unable to play or gauge the games, step into a dark, unknown and overpopulated arena to be confronted with concepts such as ‘play the hand one is dealt’, or, to roll with ‘the roll of the dice’, to ‘play’ .
Izanne Wiid, also a dentist, believes sculpture engages with real space through its physical material, becoming a language of construction and destruction, acting as reparation, a restoration in the literal as well as figurative sense of the term. ‘My sculptures are tactile, semi-erotic and transgressive.’ She uses traditional materials such as marble, wood, steel, bronze and concrete.
Sunet Ferreira has a background in jewellery design and manufacture. She has mainly applied these skills within the sculpture foundry environment. As a result she has established herself as an artisan who specialises in the production of intricate bronze works. Her sculptures are playful and small, and often display her tendency to explore the limits of both material and technique.
