# Breaking down walls 201929 March 2019 to 10 April 2019
In collaboration with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany the Pretoria Arts Association hosted an exhibition of works by students from the University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, the Tshwane University of Technology, UNISA, the Open Window Art Academy and the Artist Proof Studio. Each art institution could select 5 students for the exhibition.
Giving rise to this is the commemoration of the Berlin wall being torn down thirty years ago in 1989. Shortly after this (1994) an ideological wall was torn down with the end of Apartheid. Both these events changed the two countries altogether. Arts students were required to portray their views and emotions of these events in their works.
An independent judging panel comprising Andre Naude, Annelise Bowker and Mmutle Kgokong selected three winners:
Winner: Dayne Straightfill from the University of Johannesburg for his work titled 'We shall go back'
Runner-up: Michele Deeks from Unisa for her work titled 'Wall of remembrance'
Merit award: Caitlin Sauls from the University of Pretoria for her work titled 'FAR'.
