The tortoise and the hare

THE AGELESS RACE (The Tortoise and the Hare)
18 March to 6 April 2023

As from 18 March to 6 April 2023 the Association of Arts Pretoria will exhibit the works of three artists depicting Aesop’s fabulous characters The Tortoise and the Hare.

Guy du Toit has become one of South Africa’s most important and accomplished sculptors.  He applies the unexpected juxtaposition of bronze casts of universal, everyday objects to invite his audience to invent dialogue themselves.  There is a knowing range to his work, from the bronze “high art” of traditional sculpture to contemporary installation.  His bronze hares have become a popular series exploring form through playful bronze renderings of hares that sit and ponder their thoughts; play; dance or box with each other. Every hare holds a unique character and endearing quality.

Liekie Fouché is a Pretoria-based artist who spent her formative years on a farm in the North-Western province.  The landscapes of her childhood as well as the feelings of isolation they inspired have profoundly influenced her work.  The works in this exhibition are based on vague childhood memories and more recently by close daily contact with her grandson.  In these works, a freedom from the constraints of time and space is found where logic is replaced by anticipation of the extraordinary.  All works are done in mixed media which mainly consist of oil-pastel, graphite pencil, acrylics, collage, and varnishes on board.

Michael Teffo held his first solo exhibition of wood sculptures in 1978 at the Pretoria Arts Association.  He has enjoyed various solo-exhibitions and participated in several group exhibitions since.  Teffo is mainly self-taught and a versatile artist.  His works are widely distributed, held in many collections and are becoming increasingly more valuable.  He takes great pride in being true to himself and giving physical and spiritual embodiment to each creative work.  Here he explores the wisdom of the tortoise.
