Riaan Muller Coetzee

Saints
25 March to 15 April 2023

Versatile artist Riaan Coetzee has been sculpting since 2011 and is most passionate about concrete as a medium, and more recently steel and occasionally bronze.  For this exhibition the collection of concrete sculptures represents the spirit of Easter that reflects on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Coetzee, who completed his degree in graphic art in 2012, is the owner and designer of a small design business called Designerart where he currently focuses on illustration and fine art. He also performs the role of art director of Africa for a global NGO children's literacy company called Room to Read. Originally from Pretoria, he has spent the last three years travelling between the Karoo, Pretoria and Kwazulu Natal.

“I am interested in understanding the medium, breaking it down to its most basic forms, right down to the chemistry.  Sculpture is mentally and physically challenging.  It can be both delicate and brutal.  I am always learning more & exploring new mediums and techniques, combining old knowledge and always being reminded that every material, fundamentally, works the same.”
