Lothar Böttcher - Changing Channel
24 June to 15 July 2023Â
Böttcher states: “As an artist, I'm fascinated by the impact of mass media on our daily lives. In my recent series of sculptures called This is not a TV I explore how analogue and digital technologies shape our experiences, especially in an age where surveillance is prevalent. The series title is a nod to René Magritte's famous painting This is not a pipe which challenges the relationship between words, images, and reality.  Creating these works is a therapeutic process for me. Playfulness is central to my art. It's been joyful to watch visitors interact with my sculptures.â€

The title Changing Channels represents his exploration of different media such as photography and darkroom techniques. He has been influenced by works like Ant Farm's Media Burn and Richard Serra's Television Delivers People and Nam June Paik's art has shaped his thinking. He is also an avid advocate for glass as an expressive medium.
Lothar Böttcher is an artist who seamlessly blends the worlds of art and physics, creating playful and whimsical works that showcase his masterful craftsmanship and our innate curiosity. His work has been exhibited in influential galleries and museums across the globe. Born in Pretoria in 1973, Lothar still lives and works in his hometown, creating art that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
