Loeritha Saayman - the Lace maker

15 October 2021 to 6 November 2021
Lace is often described as a repetitive web-like pattern, formed by a woven thread that outlines the open spaces of a chosen design.  It is also known for the enhancement of a garment as a beautiful trimming.
Artist Loeritha Saayman explores the praxis of a personal journey by comparing the process of lace-making with her own mark making process in art.  She chooses to use the conceptual notion of opposite polarities in her work.  The partial protection which lace offers as a garment or tablecloth, and its quality to conceal and reveal, forms an interwoven totality.  The notion of opposite polarities can be compared and applied to various topical socio-political circumstances.
Loeritha Saayman, a graduate in Visual Arts at UNISA, opened the Brooklyn Fine Arts Studio in 2000 where she has taught art for seven years.  Today it is her private studio where paintings and sculptures are made on consignment, and where she constantly prepares for the next group or solo exhibition.  Most of her two-dimensional work is done in mixed media and on two occasions her installation works were selected for the Sasol New Signatures Art competition to be among the finalists.
She had eight solo exhibitions since 2004 and takes part in group exhibitions locally and abroad. Loeritha is also involved in various community projects on a regular base.  She acts as a judicator at the National Eisteddfod Academy annually and serves as advisory council member of the Association of Arts, Pretoria.  Her art finds home in numerous private and corporate collections locally and abroad.
