Jerice Doeg

Having started to study ceramics in the early 1970s, Jerice Doeg developed a passion for this art form and went on to follow a career as an artist for the decades to follow.  She has been part of Ceramics SA since its inception in 1972.  Her work features in both public and private collections locally and abroad.  Moreover, Jerice is not only a working ceramic artist, she has also been asked to serve as a judge at numerous exhibitions both locally and internationally.
 
As her journey began, she was immediately fascinated by the tactile properties of the soft wet clay in her hands.  The five decades she has spent on this journey are represented in this exhibition by work from the early 70s when she was working mostly with earthenware and learning about glazes and how the kiln affects the nature of the clay and how the glazes and the clay need to match.
 
Her husband who was a metallurgical engineer helped her immensely in the understanding of the elements that went into the glazes.  Material from deep in the earth, mixed with minerals, interacts differently with each other in the firing.  The technical side of ceramics became a great interest.  The firing of the kilns, whether by electricity or gas, makes a big difference in the pieces being created.
 
The last decade was spent working with porcelain.  The purity of porcelain clay is a good background for decoration and showing off the best of the glaze.  The last pieces she has been creating are remnants and shards of porcelain which were made over the years and are now being resurrected and placed on panels to hang on walls.
