Carol van Tonder -Â Betwixt & Between (Creating the ordinary out of the extraordinary)
25 March to 12 April 2023Â
Carol van Tonder, born and bred Pretorian, was a teacher before she became a full-time artist. She works mainly with water colours, coloured inks and ink pens on paper. Images of shipwrecks, flotsam and jetsam, and architectural features to name but a few, provide ideas to create the new drawings she works on.
Â
“Emotion plays a large role in my work. I observe those around me searching for a balance in their lives. My senses are exposed to hundreds of visual narratives on a daily basis waiting to be illustrated. I take time to see, to look, to absorb, to process, to conceptualise and to create. This is my artistic process.â€
Â
With these visual narratives the artist conceals and reveals intricate details. “My process is organic and shapes bleed into new ones to create my own altered reality.â€Â She researched images of fauna, flora, nanotechnology and the sea to use in her drawings.
Â
Carol van Tonder had solo exhibitions at the Art Box and has taken parts in several group exhibitions.
