Michelangelo’s Madonna della Pietá
A divine creation by a sovereign creative genius
During the High Renaissance in Italy, the artist was no longer regarded as a dedicated craftsman, but rather as a sovereign creative genius. This concept of the genius of the creative artist—one who is inspired by a superhuman force to create works of unprecedented beauty—is nowhere more fully embodied in this period than in the sculptures of Michelangelo Buonarroti. This becomes especially clear when one studies his Madonna della Pietà in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, which he completed at the age of twenty-one. Prof. Duffey discusses these magnificent artworks in full detail in this lecture.
